Thanks to a three-goal performance by midfielder Haley Mallas, Valley soccer picked up a 5-1 home win against Glendale and put a stop to the team’s three-game losing streak.

Mallas completed the hat trick Tuesday and teammates Hazel Caro and Keira each added a goal to complete the scoring. The five goals by the Monarchs marked a big offensive turnaround as the women were outscored 7-1 in their previous three games.

The first of the three conference losses came against Citrus College when the Monarchs visited the Owls on Sept. 26. The Monarchs were able to contain Citrus to a scoreless first half and put up a fight until two unanswered goals by the home team decided the match. Citrus forward Layla Serrato bagged a brace, scoring goals at the  50:13 and 81:17 and marks.

Four days later, the Valley dropped a 2-1 match against Bakersfield. The Monarchs started off strong, pressing and holding their line until an unforced defensive error led to the first goal of the match by Bakersfield forward Dulce Najera at the 31 minute mark.

Bakersfield’s Kylee Faulkner put the Knights up 2-0 after beating goalkeeper Nina Diaz at the 63:06 mark.

Five minutes later, Valley’s Hazel Caro cut Bakersfield's lead, but that was the end of the scoring. The Monarchs fell 2-1.

The Monarchs' losing streak reached three games as the Monarchs were shutout by Wes LA 3-0 on Oct. 3.

Despite a total of 12 attempted shots, the Monarchs were unable to get the ball past West LA keeper Janelle Guerrero. Guerrero totaled 7 saves. Monarchs had a total of 7 saves across 2 goalkeepers, Leslie Sanchez and Nina Diaz.

“We put in the work, we just didn’t get the outcome that we deserved,” said Valley midfielder Jennifer Trejo.

Monarch goalies Leslie Sanchez and Nina Diaz also recorded seven saves, but the Wildcats were able to get three goals across.

“We played an opponent that’s very strong and we did not match their intensity,” said head coach Jonathan Horst. “We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and figure out how we get a better result.”

With Tuesday’s win against Glendale, the Monarchs are showing the signs that lead to a successful preseason. The team totaled 33 shots, 27 on goal, while only allowing Glendale three.

The Monarchs will host Antelope Valley Oct. 10. Kickoff begins at 4 p.m.
